The Patriot Way in Action: Independence High School’s Achievement Above All Honorees
The Glendale Union High School District Governing Board honored Independence High School’s Achievement Above All recipients, celebrating individuals who demonstrate pride and perseverance every day within the community. Each recipient embodies the values that define the Patriot Way: a commitment to students, a belief in opportunity for all, and a willingness to invest time into helping others succeed. From classrooms and student leadership to campus programs and community support, their contributions strengthen the culture of Independence High School and inspire those around them.
Teacher Recipient: Susan Hadley
Susan Hadley’s connection to Independence High School is rooted in both personal history and professional dedication. A graduate of Independence High School and the University of Arizona, she returned to the campus where her own educational journey began and has spent the past 21 years helping students build confidence and success in mathematics. Throughout her career, she has taught Algebra I and Algebra I Math Lab, as well as Geometry and Algebraic Reasoning. Her long-standing commitment to Independence reflects a deep belief in supporting students at the same school that helped shape her path.
Over the years, Hadley has taken on numerous leadership roles that have strengthened both instruction and campus culture. She currently serves as Math Department Chair, Title I Coordinator, and Algebra I Team Lead, and previously supported students as the school’s Math Intervention Specialist for more than a decade. Beyond the classroom, she has contributed to student life as Spiritline Coach and Link Crew Coordinator, helping students build connections and confidence as they navigate high school. Colleagues describe her as a trusted mentor and thoughtful leader whose guidance helps teachers refine their instructional strategies and grow in their practice.
Hadley’s greatest impact is seen in the relationships she builds with students and staff. Known for her honesty, insight, and willingness to support others, she is often the person colleagues turn to for advice and perspective. In her classroom, she is especially passionate about helping students who struggle with mathematics discover that they are capable of understanding and succeeding. Through patience, encouragement, and a steady commitment to student growth, Susan Hadley continues to shape the Independence community and exemplifies the spirit of Achievement Above All.
Student Recipient: Myra Yazzie

Myra Yazzie, a senior at Independence High School, has distinguished herself through exceptional achievement in athletics, academics, and leadership. Carrying a 3.9 weighted GPA, she approaches her studies with the same discipline and determination that define her performance in competition. Known for her curiosity and commitment to learning, Myra has developed a particular interest in physics, engineering, and graphic design, consistently demonstrating a drive to challenge herself and grow.
On the athletic field, Myra has made an extraordinary mark on the Patriot sports program. She has qualified for the state championship twice, earning recognition from the Navajo Nation Times for her accomplishments in golf. In basketball, she serves as team captain and leading scorer, earning Region Player of the Year honors while guiding the girls' program to its first region championship since 2001. Her leadership and competitive spirit have elevated both teams, inspiring her teammates to pursue excellence alongside her.
Beyond awards and statistics, Myra is known for the character and resilience she brings to every challenge. After moving to Glendale before her freshman year, she quickly became an integral part of the Independence community, balancing school, athletics, and a weekend job while staying committed to her goals. Inspired by a lifelong desire to help others, she plans to continue playing collegiate golf while pursuing a career in medicine, with the goal of becoming a surgeon. Through her perseverance, leadership, and dedication to making a positive difference, Myra Yazzie reflects the values that define Achievement Above All at Independence High School.
Student Group Recipient: Patriot Brigade Marching Band

The Patriot Brigade Marching Band, under the direction of Joseph Karam, plays a central role in building school spirit and representing Independence High School throughout the community. With 38 dedicated members and student leaders, including Drum Major Keidi Guillermo Lopez alongside Michael Depaz and Kimberly Sanchez Lozano, the program brings energy, music, and pride to campus events and competitions across Arizona. From varsity football games and pep assemblies to parades and community gatherings, the band consistently creates an atmosphere that unites students, families, and supporters through performance and school pride.
This season marked a significant achievement for the Patriot Brigade. Competing in the Arizona Marching Band Association circuit, the ensemble earned top-five placements at every competition and finished third at the state finals, demonstrating remarkable musical skill, discipline, and teamwork. These accomplishments reflect countless hours of rehearsal and preparation, as students dedicate themselves to refining their performances while balancing the demands of school and other commitments.
The Patriot Brigade has used its platform to support meaningful causes within the community. Through partnerships with local organizations and car clubs, the band raised more than $1,500 to support Hispanic student scholarships with Chicanos Por La Causa. Their efforts highlight a commitment not only to musical excellence but also to service, unity, and cultural celebration. Through their dedication, collaboration, and pride in representing Independence, the Patriot Brigade Marching Band exemplifies the spirit of Achievement Above All.
Support Staff Recipient: Chris Millett

Chris Millett has been a dedicated member of the Independence High School community for more than 15 years, supporting students and athletics with commitment, care, and enthusiasm. A graduate of Ironwood High School, she continued her education at Glendale Community College and later earned a degree in Health Information Technology from DeVry University. At Independence, she currently serves as the Assistant Principal of Operations & Resources Secretary, where she plays a vital role in coordinating and supporting the school’s athletic programs while ensuring that coaches, students, and families have the resources they need.
Millett’s connection to Independence extends far beyond the office. She began her time on campus in 2010 as a volunteer coach for girls’ soccer and has continued to coach alongside Michelle Monaghan for more than a decade, later joining the girls’ and boys’ volleyball programs as an assistant coach. Over the years, she has also served the school in multiple roles, including instructional aide in the EL department, secretary in the attendance office, and Title I aide. Her willingness to step in wherever needed reflects a strong sense of dedication and adaptability that has benefited countless students and staff members.
Those who work with Millett often describe her as the backbone of Independence athletics, someone whose work ethic and care for students leave a lasting impression. Former student-athletes recall the encouragement and support she provided during their time on campus, noting how she made them feel valued and supported both on and off the field. Through her leadership, mentorship, and steady presence, Chris Millett continues to leave a lasting and meaningful impact on the Independence community.
Volunteer Recipient: Rob Ambrose

Rob Ambrose continues to make a meaningful impact at Independence High School through his dedication as a volunteer and his lasting connection to the Patriot community. Having served as principal of Independence for 16 years, Ambrose played a pivotal role in shaping the school’s culture and commitment to student success. Even in retirement, his dedication to students and educators remains strong, reflecting a lifelong passion for supporting learning and growth.
Today, Ambrose volunteers his time with students in the Advanced Engineering Science program, where he helps guide the restoration of a 1976 Volkswagen bus. Working alongside engineering teacher Matthew Massic, he provides hands-on mentorship as students learn about mechanics, problem-solving, and the patience required to restore a classic vehicle. His enthusiasm for classic cars and willingness to work alongside students have made the project both educational and inspiring, sparking curiosity and excitement among those involved.
For Ambrose, volunteering is about maintaining the connections that have always mattered most: relationships with students, teachers, and the broader school community. He values the opportunity to share his passion for restoring vintage cars while encouraging students to take pride in their work and embrace the learning process. Through his continued presence, mentorship, and genuine care for students, Rob Ambrose remains an important part of the Independence community and a strong example of the lasting impact of service.
