Honoring 25 Years of Distinguished Service: Sunnyslope Staff Recognized
The Glendale Union High School District Governing Board proudly honored five Sunnyslope High School staff members for completing 25 years of dedicated service. This remarkable milestone reflects expertise, loyalty, and an enduring impact on students, schools, and the entire community. These honorees are more than employees; they are mentors, leaders, and pillars of excellence whose influence will be felt for generations to come.
Johnny Frias, Counselor
For more than two decades, Johnny Frias has guided students through both academic challenges and personal growth. Beginning his career as a Language Arts teacher at Thunderbird High School, he later transitioned to counseling at Sunnyslope, where he specializes in supporting students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
Beyond his counseling role, Mr. Frias has been a consistent presence on the athletic fields, coaching and mentoring student-athletes across multiple sports. His dedication to fostering teamwork, resilience, and self-confidence has made him a trusted guide for countless students.
His work extends far beyond the classroom and the counseling office. Mr. Frias is known for shaping lives in ways that last well beyond graduation, embodying the heart of what it means to be a Viking.
Norris Hadley, Day Porter
Since joining Sunnyslope in 2014, Norris Hadley has been a reliable and welcoming presence behind the scenes, ensuring the school runs smoothly each day. Tasked with the daily responsibility of maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming campus, he carries out his work with diligence and pride.
Mr. Hadley’s steady contributions set a positive tone not only for staff and students but also for the broader school environment. His attention to detail and consistent reliability have made him indispensable.
Beyond his daily responsibilities, he is often found supporting school events and athletic competitions, giving generously of his time and energy. His presence reflects both service and Viking pride, strengthening Sunnyslope’s sense of community.
Paul Hershberger, World Languages Teacher
Paul Hershberger has dedicated decades to cultivating curiosity, confidence, and cultural understanding in his students. Through his instruction in Spanish, German, and English Language Learning (ELL), he has opened doors to new worlds for learners at Sunnyslope since 2004.
His classroom is known for its creativity and enthusiasm, qualities that make language learning both rigorous and engaging. Beyond campus, Mr. Hershberger has extended his expertise into the community, supporting adult English learners and broadening access to education.
Colleagues and students alike admire his willingness to take on new responsibilities, demonstrating a commitment to continual growth. His mentorship has enriched countless academic journeys, leaving an indelible mark on both Sunnyslope and GUHSD.
Michael Robinson, Social Studies Teacher
A true lifelong Viking, Michael Robinson has devoted his entire teaching career to Sunnyslope High School. His expertise spans World History, U.S. History, ELL, and Media Studies, giving students opportunities to engage deeply with a wide range of subjects.
Mr. Robinson’s contributions extend well beyond the classroom. He has led the Social Studies Department, directed theatre productions, coached the Academic Decathlon team, and sponsored multiple extracurricular programs. His influence reaches every corner of campus life.
Through his leadership, Mr. Robinson has inspired students to think critically, act boldly, and embrace their talents. His lasting presence is proof that one educator’s passion can truly transform a community.
Sarah Schlesinger, PE Teacher and Coach
For 25 years, Sarah Schlesinger has built a legacy as a PE teacher, coach, and department chair—guiding generations of students to achieve both athletic excellence and personal growth.
Her tenure is marked by numerous highlights, including championship badminton and tennis teams, mentorship of fellow educators, and the creation of a program that prioritizes both performance and wellness. Her leadership has helped shape a culture of camaraderie, perseverance, and achievement on and off the court.
Mrs. Schlesinger is remembered not only for her wins and her teams but also for her unwavering commitment to her students’ overall success. Her influence continues to inspire students long after they leave Sunnyslope.
