Honoring Excellence: Independence High School’s Achievement Above All Recipients
The GUHSD Governing Board proudly presented the Achievement Above All award to five outstanding recipients, recognizing their commitment, leadership, and lasting contributions to Independence High School and the community.
Teacher Recipient: Ms. Sarah Farson
Ms. Sarah Farson, a Greenway High School graduate, has been shaping the performing arts at Independence since 2016. As the department chair for performing arts, she teaches theatre and stagecraft, creating a welcoming and engaging learning environment. With a background in improv performance and after-school theatre programs, her dedication has transformed the program into a vibrant community. Choir Director Katie Sweeny describes her as "an exceptional teacher and a passionate advocate for the performing arts."
Beyond the classroom, Ms. Farson dedicates countless hours to producing theatre performances, creating a haunted house for the fall festival, and coordinating work-based learning for her students. Engineering Science Teacher Matthew Massic praises her for "shaping students through the art of theatre and set construction," inspiring creativity, teamwork, and confidence in her students.
Student Recipient: Brianna Jackson
Brianna Jackson, the Achievement Above All student recipient, moved to Independence from Maryland as a freshman and quickly became a beacon of leadership and positivity. As Student Body President, she tirelessly advocates for student voices and works to ensure every student feels valued and connected on campus. English Department Chair Ms. Marshall describes her as "a remarkable individual whose kindness and leadership create a positive school environment."
In addition to her student council role, Brianna is deeply engaged in the school community, organizing events and inspiring peers. AP Government teacher Lori Sheets commends her as "a future changemaker" whose curiosity and dedication to collective action make a lasting impact at Independence.
Student Group Recipient: Unified Sports
The Unified Sports Club, represented by leaders Julissa Garcia Meza, Diego Fuentes Camacho, Esteban Ramirez, and sponsor Jennifer Perry, exemplifies inclusion and teamwork. The club unites students of all abilities through athletics, fostering friendships, and promoting respect. Their participation in sports like basketball, soccer, and bowling has created an environment where everyone can contribute and thrive.
This dedication earned them a "National Banner of Recognition" from the Special Olympics, a testament to their commitment to inclusivity. The program not only builds student leaders but also strengthens the school’s culture, making it truly deserving of the Achievement Above All Award.
Support Staff Recipient: Ms. Julie Holt
Julie Holt, Independence’s bookstore manager since 2010, is recognized for her exceptional organizational skills and dedication to the school. She ensures smooth bookstore operations, helping student groups manage budgets and making resources accessible to all. Assistant Principal Kelsea Threadgill praises her as "a crucial part of the school community whose hard work impacts students and staff alike."
Beyond her efficiency, Julie is a caring and supportive presence on campus. The Career Transition Service Specialist, Winnie Moore, describes her as "a faithful friend and coworker who goes above and beyond to support those around her," highlighting her kindness and unwavering commitment to the school’s success.
Volunteer Recipient: Griselda Navarro
Griselda Navarro is a dedicated parent who has gone above and beyond to support Independence High School’s football and cheer programs. Alongside her husband, she has provided meals, gear, and a welcoming space for athletes. Varsity football player Freddie Solomon acknowledges her commitment, stating that she "ensured we had the resources and encouragement needed for success."
Her leadership has transformed parent involvement in the football program, fostering a culture of support and community. Head Varsity Coach Shane Hagen expresses gratitude for her efforts, saying, "Griselda was instrumental in building a foundation for lasting support in our program." Her contributions make her a deserving recipient of the Achievement Above All Volunteer Award.
