CORTEZ AAA RECIPIENTS HONORED

Celebrating Excellence: Cortez High School’s Achievement Above All Honorees
The GUHSD Governing Board proudly honored 4 outstanding individuals and 1 outstanding student group with the prestigious Achievement Above All award, recognizing their dedication, leadership, and lasting impact on the school community.
Teacher Recipient: Tish Jefferson
Tish Jefferson has been a part of Cortez High School for 11 years, initially as a social worker before becoming an academic counselor. In addition to guiding students and supporting their academic success, she oversees programs like Link Crew, mentors freshmen, and works closely with special education students. She has also spent five years as a track coach, encouraging student-athletes both in and out of the classroom.
Former supervisor Angie Dobberphul describes Tish as “one-of-a-kind,” highlighting her ability to support students with both accountability and care. Her contributions to the school community extend across multiple roles, making a significant impact on students and staff alike.
Student Recipient: Kolby Lopez
Kolby Lopez is a great example of academic excellence and leadership. With an impressive weighted GPA of 4.75, he ranks in the top 1% of his graduating class while excelling in Advanced Placement and Honors courses. In addition to his academic success, Kolby has been a key member of the football and baseball teams, serving as Football Club Treasurer and demonstrating exceptional teamwork and sportsmanship.
His dedication extends beyond the classroom and field—he has volunteered for community clean-up efforts and contributed to Feed My Starving Children. Math teacher Katy Griepp praises Kolby’s “intellectual curiosity” and motivation citing his determination to master AP Calculus even after taking the exam. Kolby’s aspirations to become an electrical engineer at ASU reflect his commitment to excellence and lifelong learning.
Student Group Recipient: Spiritline
The Cortez Spiritline is the heartbeat of the school, bringing energy and pride to every event. Their year-round commitment includes hosting pep rallies, creating crash posters for football games, honoring veterans, and organizing community events like Future Freshman Night and junior high cheer programs.
Assistant Principal Brian Galbreath applauds their growth, saying, “They’ve set a shining example of what it means to be CHS leaders.” With help from their sponsor Ashley Botar and with their passion and dedication, the spiritline has elevated school spirit and set a new standard for excellence at Cortez.
Support Staff Recipient: Nick Malding
For 18 years, Nick Malding has been the backbone of Cortez High School. As a facilities foreman, he ensures the campus runs smoothly, handling maintenance tasks with efficiency and creativity, even when faced with budget constraints. Known for his humor and professionalism, Nick is always ready to lend a hand doing so with authenticity and dedication no matter the task.
Assistant Foreman Nick Charette calls him “an amazing leader, husband, father, and friend.” Nick’s dedication to Cortez goes far beyond his job title—he is a true cornerstone of the school.
Volunteer Recipient: Jerry Bonaguidi
Jerry Bonaguidi has been a vital part of the Hart Pantry for five years, ensuring students receive weekly food bags. His generosity extends beyond deliveries, he also represented the school during the A+ School of Excellence application process, demonstrating his deep commitment to the Cortez community.
His impact is best summed up by Maya Angelou’s words: “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Jerry’s kindness and dedication have left a lasting impression on the lives of many.
