Honoring Apollo's Exceptional Achievers: Achievement Above All Recognition
On January 15, the Governing Board of Apollo High School recognized five remarkable individuals and groups whose dedication and excellence have made a significant impact on the school community. These honorees were awarded the Achievement Above All recognition, the highest honor bestowed on a teacher, support staff employee, student, student group, and school volunteer. Below are the stories of those who were celebrated:
Teacher Recipient: Laura Richards
Laura Richards exemplifies what it means to be a dedicated educator and leader. Whether teaching Spanish, guiding Link Crew students, or supporting numerous school activities, Ms. Richards leaves a lasting impression on everyone she encounters. Her engaging and passionate teaching style, combined with her deep knowledge of Spanish culture, makes her classes both enjoyable and inspiring. She is described by her colleagues and students as a teacher who fosters a safe and welcoming environment, always pushing students to achieve their best. Senior Zach Runnels shares, “Ms. Richards brings a charming humanity and knowledgeable energy to everything she does.” Department Chair Emily Berger adds, “Laura’s efforts leading the Apollo LINK Crew have made our campus culture better for all.” Through her work in the classroom and with student leadership programs, Ms. Richards truly embodies the values of Apollo High School and the district.
Student Recipient: Asha Obsiye
Asha Obsiye’s time at Apollo has been nothing short of amazing. She’s been super involved in Key Club, National Honor Society, and Hospitality, leaving a lasting impact on both the school and the community. As the current president of Key Club and a former Lt. Governor for the Southwest District Key Club Board, Asha has really stepped up as a leader and is always giving back. She’s logged over 300 community service hours and has a knack for inspiring everyone around her. Her classmate Krystal Claudo calls her “a charismatic leader” and appreciates all she’s done for Key Club and beyond. Asha’s journey is a huge inspiration to her peers, and there’s no doubt she’s got an incredible future ahead!
Student Group Recipient: Culinary Arts Team
The Culinary Arts team at Apollo High School, under the guidance of Chef Mr. Coloma, has achieved remarkable success both in and out of the kitchen. From mastering essential cooking skills to competing at state and national levels, the Culinary Arts team consistently demonstrates excellence. Assistant Principal Tiffany Fain notes that the students not only learn culinary techniques but also develop discipline, creativity, and teamwork. These students are more than just aspiring chefs; they are leaders who represent Apollo High School with pride. Their accomplishments are a reflection of the hard work and passion instilled by Chef Coloma, who helps them develop the skills and confidence needed for success beyond high school.
Support Staff Recipient: Auggie Lopez
Auggie Lopez’s dedication to Apollo High School is remarkable. Having worked at the school for over a decade, Auggie’s journey from night custodian to Foreman is a testament to his hard work and commitment. He is a dependable and approachable figure on campus, always willing to lend a hand and support his colleagues. As Apollo’s Chef Coloma puts it, “Auggie is one of those people who always comes through.” His work ensures that Apollo remains a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for everyone. Whether supporting staff or students, Auggie’s positive attitude and commitment make him a beloved member of the Apollo family.
Volunteer Recipient: Cindy Chrisman
Cindy Chrisman has been an invaluable volunteer at Apollo High School for nearly a decade, particularly in the band and sports programs. Her dedication and support have had a lasting impact on students, staff, and the Apollo community. Band Director Gabe Lugo shares that Cindy has been essential to the success of the band program, from fitting and repairing uniforms to making new ones for a growing program. Her contributions go beyond the band, as she also assists with other athletic programs, ensuring that students have the resources they need to succeed. Cindy’s selflessness and positivity inspire all who work with her, and her devotion to the Apollo community is truly deserving of recognition.
These five honorees embody the spirit of excellence at Apollo High School. Through their teaching, leadership, support, and volunteerism, they make Apollo a better place for everyone.
