THUNDERBIRD AAA RECIPIENTS HONORED
Thunderbird High School Achievement Above All Honorees
On November 6, the Thunderbird High School community gathered to celebrate the extraordinary individuals who exemplify the spirit of excellence and dedication that defines their school. The Achievement Above All awards are the highest honors bestowed by the Governing Board, recognizing outstanding contributions in teaching, support, student excellence, student groups, and volunteerism. Below are this year’s honorees, who represent some of the very best of Thunderbird High School.
Teacher Recipient: Mrs. Kelly Ahern
Mrs. Kelly Ahern has brought her passion and expertise to Thunderbird High School’s Sensory Integration Program for students with Autism. A St. Mary’s High School graduate, she earned her undergraduate degree in Secondary English Education from ASU and a Master’s in Special Education from Grand Canyon University. Her innovative teaching methods, unwavering patience, and creative problem-solving make a significant difference in her students’ lives every day.
Dr. Tiffany Burkett-Crist, school psychologist, praised her as "not just a phenomenal teacher, but a wonderful human being," while Jennifer Perry from Independence High School highlighted her professional and collaborative spirit. Beyond the classroom, Mrs. Ahern dedicates time to volunteering for St. Vincent de Paul, St. Mary’s Food Bank, and the Fallen Heroes Wreath Program.
Her leadership, compassion, and commitment to her students and community make her an invaluable member of the Thunderbird family.
Student Recipient: Katherine "Beezer" Geer
Katherine "Beezer" Geer is a standout student who exemplifies excellence both in and out of the classroom. A dedicated scholar, her favorite subjects include Biology and Calculus, and her teachers rave about her intellect and positive energy.
Shannon Miller, AP Biology teacher, described her as "an outstanding student and role model," while Melanie Allen, AP English teacher, noted her "unwavering dedication to her studies" and "uplifting presence."
In addition to her academic achievements, Beezer enjoys hiking and traveling, embracing a well-rounded approach to life that inspires her peers and teachers alike. Her commitment to excellence makes her a true asset to the Thunderbird community.
Student Group Recipient: Navy Junior ROTC
The Thunderbird NJROTC, under the leadership of Commander Schmidt and Senior Chief Justin Beck, has earned distinction as one of the top Navy JROTC units in the country, recognized as a Distinguished Unit by the U.S. Navy. This cadet-run organization thrives on strong character, leadership, and a dedication to community service.
Assistant Principal Dawn Bork described NJROTC students as "the epitome of strong character and giving back to the community." At the same time, Assistant Principal Layne Peterson commended the group for their service-driven mindset and busy involvement in competitions, parades, and campus events.
The NJROTC cadets exemplify leadership and teamwork, enriching the Thunderbird community with their dedication and accomplishments.
Support Staff Recipient: Ms. Angela Antunez
Ms. Angela Antunez joined Thunderbird High School as the Student Lead Coordinator in 2020, bringing a strong sense of care and professionalism to her role. A graduate of Washington High School, she previously worked as a cafeteria assistant before joining Thunderbird.
Her colleagues admire her dedication and pride in her work. Cafeteria Manager Renee Celaya remarked, "Angela loves working with students and takes great pride in her work. She is knowledgeable, dependable, and a great asset to the cafeteria."
Ms. Antunez’s leadership and commitment to supporting students make her an integral part of the Thunderbird team.
Volunteer Recipients: John and Catherine Martin
John and Catherine Martin have been pillars of the Thunderbird parent community for over five years, dedicating countless hours to supporting students and staff. With two sons—one a graduate and one a current junior—the Martins have served as co-presidents of the Titan Parent Association and vice-presidents of the Band Boosters.
Their contributions extend beyond Thunderbird. They also support NJROTC, host meals for teachers and students, and organize community events. Band Director Andrew Torbert described them as "among the most supportive parent volunteers I’ve come across in my career," and Athletic Secretary Kim Baker highlighted their unwavering commitment to the school’s well-being.
The Martins’ tireless efforts and leadership enrich the Thunderbird community and make a lasting impact on everyone they touch.
Each of these honorees represents the heart of Thunderbird High School—exemplifying dedication, passion, and excellence.
