MOON VALLEY AAA RECIPIENTS HONORED
At the most recent Achievement Above All celebration, the Governing Board of the Glendale Union High School District recognized the outstanding achievements of exceptional individuals. This annual event honors key members of the GUHSD community, including a teacher, student, student group, support staff member, and volunteer. Moon Valley High School Principal Kort Miner proudly introduced these honorees to the community, the governing board, and the superintendent. Each awardee received certificates or special recognition for their extraordinary contributions during the ceremony.
Vince Pernick, Teacher of the Year
For 16 years, Vince Pernick has been more than a teacher, he’s been a mentor, a friend and an inspiration to countless students in the Glendale Union High School District. Mr. Pernick is Moon Valley’s Teacher of the Year. With a culinary background from the Arizona Culinary Institute, Mr. Pernick is Moon Valley’s Culinary teacher. Through the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), his students have not only mastered culinary skills, but also cultivated skills in leadership, teamwork, and civic responsibility. Outside of the kitchen, Pernick is a passionate archer and dedicated car restorer.
Moon Valley High School teacher Dr. Lora Zimmer says, “Vince is a team builder who strives to bring everyone together through fun and good food. He always looks out for others and works tirelessly to improve our school culture for students and staff.”
Lynn Ong, Student of the Year
Ranked in the top 1% of his class, Lynn Ong is Moon Valley’s Student of the Year. Since his freshman year, Ong has been heavily involved in clubs and activities while managing a demanding academic schedule. Ong has earned accolades including 1st place in the FBLA Website Development competition statewide, recognition as Student of the Month, an Advanced Placement Scholastic Scholar with distinction, and the prestigious title of National Merit Semifinalist. Ong plans to attend a four-year college, majoring in Computer Engineering, where he can combine his love for technology with his vision for a brighter future.

Moon Valley Cheer, Student Group of the Year
Moon Valley High School’s Student Group of the Year is the Cheer Squad. The squad plays a significant role in boosting school spirit and promoting good sportmanship at every event and game they attend. Sponsored by teacher Shauntel Sussex, the team has earned several accolades over the past five years including, 1st place at the state region level, placed 2nd and 3rd nationally and this year they plan on bringing home a national title. When the team is not cheering, they volunteer at the St. Mary’s Food Bank.
Moon Valley Teacher Nicole Rearick says, “I am so proud of Coach Sussex and her remarkable team for winning this award. This accomplishment is a testament to their hard work, dedication, unwavering spirit, and athletic excellence. Under Coach Sussex’s leadership, the team has not only honed their skills, but has also fostered a strong sense of camaraderie and support. Their passion for cheerleading shines through in every performance and they are truly so fun to watch. On top of being great cheerleaders, every single one of these girls is an amazing human. I am so proud of all they have achieved and of the hard work and commitment that the team shows. It’s ring season!”
Rachel Schumer, Support Staff of the Year
District alumni, Rachel Schumer is Moon Valley’s Support Staff of the Year. Schumer first began at Moon Valley in 2014 in the attendance office and later transitioned to the counseling department as a Data Processor. She aspires to continue learning and excelling in her current role. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Schumer enjoys her time with her dogs, family and friends.
Schumer’s coworker Rachel Bauer says, “She is such an amazing human, even though she won’t let me hug her. You will be hard pressed to find someone that is as compassionate as her regarding her friends, family and animals, or that can run data and keep an entire school in running order. I’m so lucky to have her on my team both personally and professionally. I’m proud of you Schumer!”
Jorge Romero, Volunteer of the Year
Volunteer Assistant Football Coach for Moon Valley’s varsity football team, Jorge Romero is this year’s Volunteer of the Year. Romero is described as a mentor, a guide, and a source of inspiration for Moon Valley’s young athletes. When he is not volunteering with the football team, Romero is a K-8 physical education teacher and athletic director at a local elementary school.
Reflecting on his role, Romero says, “I have had the privilege to witness firsthand how volunteer coaching can transform lives. For me, it has provided a platform to share my love for special teams in football and to make a positive impact on our youth.”
